Ruling out nosocomial transmission of Cryptosporidium in a renal transplantation unit: case report
2016
Background Cryptosporidium spp. is a ubiquitous parasite affecting humans as well as domestic and wild vertebrates, causing diarrhea in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised hosts worldwide. Its transmission occurs primarily by the fecal-oral route. In humans, C. parvum and C. hominis are the most prevalent species, whereas immunocompetent and immunocompromised individuals can also be infected by other zoonotic species. Renal transplant patients are prone to develop cryptosporidiosis, which can induce severe and life-threatening diarrhea. Case presentation We report here a series of nearly concomitant cases of acute symptomatic cryptosporidiosis in three renal transplant patients atten…

BACKGROUND: Detailed descriptions of the patterns of disease progression of deceased coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients have not been well explored. OBJECTIVES: This study sought to explore disease progression patterns and risk factors associated with mortality of deceased patients with COVID-19. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Epidemiological, clinical, laboratory, and imaging data (from 15 January to 26 March 2020) of laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 patients were collected retrospectively from two hospitals, Hubei province, China. Disease progression patterns of patients were analyzed based on laboratory data, radiological findings, and Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score. Ris…

Renal Function Recovery Strategies Following Marathon in Amateur Runners
2022
Long distance races have a physiological impact on runners. Up to now, studies analyzing these physiological repercussions have been mainly focused on muscle and cardiac damage, as well as on its recovery. Therefore, a limited number of studies have been done to explore acute kidney failure and recovery after performing extreme exercises. Here, we monitored renal function in 76 marathon finishers (14 females) from the day before participating in a marathon until 192 h after crossing the finish line (FL). Renal function was evaluated by measuring serum creatinine (sCr) and the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). We randomly grouped our cohort into three intervention groups to compare three dif…

Retinal optical coherence tomography angiography as a biomarker of acute kidney injury after acute coronary syndrome
2018
Background Contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is frequent and associated with long-term renal impairment and mortality. Retinal vessel density (RVD) measured by OCT-Angiography could reflect the global cardiovascular burden of ACS patients and thus provide a fast and non-invasive assessment of the systemic microcirculation, that may be involved in CIN occurrence. Methods Between October 2016 and March 2017, 452 ACS patients were admitted in our coronary care unit. Retinal OCT-A was performed within two days after PCI. Patients were divided in two groups, according to Acute kidney injury (AKI) occurrence (KDIGO …
Predictive factors of transarterial chemoembolisation toxicity in unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma
2013
Abstract Background Transarterial chemoembolisation (TACE) is an effective treatment for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but can cause severe toxicity. Aim To identify predictive factors of severe TACE-related toxicity in patients with unresectable HCC. Methods All HCC patients who underwent TACE at the Dijon University Hospital between 2008 and 2011 were included in this retrospective study. Severe TACE-related toxicity was defined as the occurrence of any adverse event grade ≥4, or any adverse event that caused a prolongation of hospitalisation of >8 days, or any additional hospitalisation within 1 month after TACE. Factors predicting toxicity were identified using a logistic…
RIFLE classification as predictive factor of mortality in patients with cirrhosis admitted to intensive care unit.
2009
Background and Aim: To evaluate the association of the Risk, Injury, Failure, Loss and End-stage renal failure (RIFLE) score on mortality in patients with decompensated cirrho- sis admitted to intensive care unit (ICU). Methods: A cohort of 412 patients with cirrhosis consecutively admitted to ICU was classified according to the RIFLE score. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the factors associated with mortality. Liver-specific, Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II, Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) and RIFLE scores on admission, were compared by receiver-operator characteristic curves. Results: The overall mortality during ICU st…
Real-time, ultrasound-guided infraclavicular axillary vein cannulation for renal replacement therapy in the critical care unit—A prospective interven…
2015
Abstract Purpose The cannulation of the axillary vein for renal replacement therapy is a rarely performed procedure in the critical care unit. We defined the venipuncture and catheterization success rates and early mechanical complication rates of this technique in critical care patients with acute kidney injury. Materials and methods Twenty-nine mechanically ventilated patients with clinical indications for insertion of temporary hemodialysis catheters enrolled in a registered trial (NCT01919528) as a pilot cohort. We performed 29 real-time, ultrasound-guided infraclavicular axillary vein cannulation attempts for renal replacement therapy. We defined the venipuncture and catheterization su…
